Roland Barthes and Semiotics

Roland Barthes and Semiotics

Roland Barthes was a ‘French literary theorist, philosopher, linguist, critic and semiotician’.

Semiotics – used a lot by fashion brands and adverts. Semiotics comes from the Greek word ‘Semeion’, which means sign. A sign is something that conveys meaning to someone. Some signs we process naturally, effortlessly and without thinking about them. Reading signs and processing them can make us behave differently, or persuade us – or influence us – to do something. We all do semiotic study naturally, we come to judgements based on the signs we are presented with – for example, clothing is a sign system; how different people dress even if a group of people are equally knowledgeable on a subject you hear them talk about and present in the same way, you will gather interpretation of each o he people depending on how they are dressed, and try to depict what sort of person they are.
